Style guide
How to style an oversized tee
An oversized tee looks effortless when it is styled on purpose and sloppy when it is not. The difference is rarely the tee. It is proportion, and a few small decisions about what goes above, below and around it. Here is how we think about it at House of Swoon, where every tee is cut oversized with a drop shoulder and made in 220 to 250 GSM cotton.
Start with proportion, not trends
A drop shoulder tee adds volume at the top of your frame. The single rule that makes it work is balance: if the top is loose, give the bottom half some structure, or keep the whole outfit deliberately loose so it looks like a decision. Fitted with loose looks sharp. Loose with loose looks relaxed. Loose with nothing in particular looks like you grabbed the first thing on the chair.
Because the shoulder seam sits below your natural shoulder, the sleeve length and the body length change how the tee reads. Our size chart lists front length from 27 inches in XS to 31 inches in 4XL, so on most people the hem lands somewhere between the hip and the upper thigh. That hem line is what you style around.
1. Pair it with straight or tapered trousers
Straight leg trousers, chinos and tapered cargos give the oversized top a clean vertical line underneath. Keep the rise mid to high so the hem of the tee does not swallow the waistband. Dark denim, olive, khaki and black all work, and a black tee with black trousers is the easiest good outfit you will ever put together.
2. Go wide on purpose
Wide leg jeans, parachute pants and relaxed joggers turn the tee into part of a full streetwear silhouette. The trick is to let one piece lead. If the graphic is loud, choose a plain, single colour bottom. If the print is small and quiet, like our Minimalist tee, you can let the trousers carry more attitude.
3. Tuck the front only
A half tuck is the fastest way to add shape without losing the oversized feel. Tuck just the front few inches into your waistband and leave the sides and back loose. It defines the waist, shows off a belt if you are wearing one, and works with high waisted trousers, skirts and shorts alike.
4. Layer it under an open shirt or jacket
An oversized tee is the best base layer for a lightweight overshirt, a denim jacket or a bomber. Leave the outer layer open so the graphic stays visible, and make sure the tee hem hangs a little lower than the jacket hem. That offset looks intentional and gives you a layered look without any extra effort. In cooler months, a plain long sleeve worn under the tee adds a third layer and keeps the print in view.
5. Wear it over fitted bottoms
Bike shorts, leggings, slim jeans and skirts all balance a big top. For skirts, pick a length that ends above or below the tee hem, not exactly at it. A tee dress moment is also fair game: in the larger sizes, the tee reaches far enough down to wear as a short dress with a belt and chunky shoes.
6. Let the shoes set the tone
Chunky sneakers, high tops and boots keep the outfit grounded and sporty. Slides and sandals push it towards home and beach. Loafers or clean leather sneakers dress it up just enough for a casual office day or dinner. The tee stays the same and the mood changes completely, which is why a small shoe collection does more for your wardrobe than a large tee collection.
7. Mind the sleeves and the neckline
Sleeves on an oversized tee sit longer and looser. If they feel too wide on your arms, a single cuff, folding the hem up once or twice, gives a neat, tailored edge. For the neckline, avoid stretching the collar when you pull the tee on and off, so it keeps its shape. Layering a thin chain or pendant over the tee lifts the whole outfit for almost no cost.
8. Choose the graphic to fit the day
Your tee does the talking, so pick the message for the room. A witchy print like Bad Witch or the crooked hat on Witchin’ It Up sits well at a late evening plan or a gig. A one word tee is easier for work adjacent days. A Hinglish one liner from the Bindaas drop is ideal for a chai run, a road trip or a group chat you would like to win. Our devotional Shrine prints, such as Mahakal and Om Namah Shivaya, are made plainly and are best worn with the respect they were designed with.
9. Keep the palette tight
Three colours is a good working limit. Take your tee colour, add a neutral like black, grey, denim or khaki, and choose one accent for shoes, a bag or a cap. Most of our tees come in black or deep, moody colours like navy, olive and purple, which makes matching easy. Avoid adding a second loud print to the outfit, because the graphic already takes that role.
What to wear it to
For a casual weekday, pair it with straight jeans and clean sneakers. For a night out, layer it under a dark jacket with boots. For travel, go with joggers and slip on shoes because comfort matters more than photos. For a festive evening, style it with tapered trousers and a jacket, and let the print be the conversation starter. For lounge days at home, it needs nothing at all.
Common mistakes to avoid
Going one size too big on top of an already oversized cut is the most frequent one. The tee is designed to be loose, so start with your usual size and only go up if you want a truly dramatic drape. The second is ignoring the hem, which should land at a flattering point on your body, not right at your widest point. The third is wearing it with baggy bottoms, an oversized jacket and a big bag, all at once, so nothing has a shape. Pick one hero piece of volume and support it.
Questions we get asked
Can an oversized tee suit a shorter frame?
Yes. Choose a shorter hem, tuck the front, and keep the bottoms slim or high waisted so your leg line stays long. Cuffing the sleeves also stops them from overwhelming your arms.
Which size should I pick?
Our tees are cut oversized already, so most people start with the size they normally wear. Read the full size guide, including how to compare against a tee you own, in our oversized tee size guide.
Are the tees unisex?
Yes. There is one cut in eight sizes, from XS to 4XL, with no gender rules.
