Halloween began as Samhain, the old Celtic festival marking summer’s end, when the line between the living and the dead was thought to be at its thinnest. People hid behind masks and costumes so wandering spirits wouldn’t know them, and carved lanterns to keep the dark at bay.
All Souls’ Day follows on 2 November, when families remember those they have lost, lighting candles and visiting graves. In Kolkata, the old cemeteries glow with candlelight that evening.
